During his career, Smith has gained extensive experience in working with small businesses and emerging growth technology companies. Most recently he served as a Director at Positronics Research where he managed all aspects of a start-up Research and Development (R&D) firm including strategic planning, proposal creation, securing government funding, patent management and company operations. Clients include the US Air Force (USAF), the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), Defense Advance Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the NASA Institute for Advanced Concepts (NIAC). Applications include energy storage, nuclear medicine, propulsion, and sensors and destruction of nuclear, chemical and biological threats.

Prior to that, Smith served as Vice President of Silicon Valley Bank's Technology Division in San Diego, CA, where he managed a complex portfolio of venture capital back companies across a wide spectrum of technologies. He managed the overall profitability and risk of a portfolio of companies ranging from pre-revenue start-up to publicly traded with annual sales of over $250.0 million. He was responsible for performing in-depth analysis, investor due diligence and negotiating transaction terms ranging in size from $250,000 to $10.0 million. He helped co-found AlertTech Systems and currently acts as the company’s Managing Member. Mr. Smith received his B.S. from the Pennsylvania State University.
